I got some other stuff from SSR so it took a little longer than just the unlock. Most of the hours i spent watching car videos on youtube and Netflix. Now keep in mind i was very hesitant on removing my ECU but the guys made me feel comfortable and talked me through the whole process and let me observe part of it.
First Impressions: Soon as the engine was fired i had huge smile on my face the GTS roar is one of my favorite features of this tune. And my neighbors are happy now that the cold start sequence has been removed. When i took a test drive the car felt and behaved the same as stock which was great but when it boosted it was a whole other animal. So much torque it kept pinning me back in my seat as the RPM's raced to redline. The sound of the turbos spooling was intoxicating.

The only problem was my tires couldn't handle it. Im still on my original PSS that the car came with and they are almost done. Definitely invest in a sticky set of tires because your'e gonna need them to put all that power down. This s55 is very potent and power was there throughout the whole rpm range in every gear. Throttle response is immediate especially in the sport plus setting and something that i will have to retrain my right leg to work with.
The car idles the same as stock and didn't have any hiccups so far. The DCT tune was noticeable too when shifting at the top range. I especially like that fact that they threw that in there as one of the features. This is how i imagined the car would be when i first picked it up.

Meaning the JB4 is working the wastegate as much as it can be worked. And even in that trim it struggled to hold 17psi rpm and 13psi rpm. Overall I'm happy with the results but sad to report this motor with the stock turbo is about tapped out at around rw.
Maybe with the IC on cold day we can extend that to rw. But it's going to take a questionably loose dynojet and a prayer to get to rw. On the plus side I superimposed one of the runs against the same car when it was stock and was pleased with the whp delta. All the N54 functionality is there, we've put lagfix back in, and partial throttle is buttery smooth. Tapers to 13psi rpm give or take.

Turbo upgrades for the N55 fall into three stages, with stage 3 generating the most horsepower gains, which of course also comes with a bigger price tag. You might as well maximize your stock turbo power before you go chasing for more. This list below will get you to FBO full bolt-on and should get you in the whp range.
As you start making more power, you need parts that can handle and deliver that power. Here is everything that is a must-have for upgrading turbos excluding anything that will come in the turbo kit :.
bootmod3 S55 - BMW F80 F82 M3 M4 F87 M2 Competition Tune
You can add E85 to this list if you want to be sitting around whp on your stock setup. As you get more aggressive with your N55 horsepower goals, you will need to start thinking about things such as fuel pumps, meth kits, port injection, etc.
Before I get chopped, I will say that you do not need to upgrade your intercooler or exhaust for any of these turbos upgrades. The N55 turbo stage 1 setup is essentially a slightly modified stock turbo. The larger wheel allows the engine to hold the boost until approx. Overall, a stage 1 upgrade is a great option if you blow your stock turbo and want a slight upgrade without any added headache tuning, part upgrades, etc.
If you are a more serious tuner and looking to break the whp mark by a good margin, stage 2 is likely the best option for you. The install cost of upgrading turbos warrants doing it right the first time! Stage 2 options are where the serious tuners should start.
Stage 2 systems will put you in the whp ballpark. Engine reliability obviously decreases as you push the upper range of the setup, but is also highly dependent on your tune and other factors. We will cover reliability in more depth a bit further down! Stage 2 is the best option for N55 owners who are serious about tuning, want more than whp, and are willing to spend a pretty penny. Inlets and Outlets Upgraded inlets and outlets: these are required depending on manufacturer and some kits may include them.
Fuel Supply Upgrades To reach the full power potential of a stage 2 turbo you will need additional fueling. Your two options here are a meth kit or port injection. Fuel Upgrades In addition to needing some fuel supply upgrades, you will also need some actual fuel upgrades. Running high levels of boost and generating high power levels will require…. Without fuel and fuel delivery upgrades, on 93 octane pump gas, you can expect to run around the whp range.
There are 3 reputable companies that offer stage 2 setups: Pure, Vargas, and Steam Turbochargers. Pure and Vargas are the more widely used setups, but Steam has a good offering which has about 25whp of additional upside vs. Here is some info on the setups in no particular order:. With the supporting fuel mods that we discussed above, this setup is good for about whp. Similar to their stage 1 offering, the turbo uses all OEM housings and appears stock from the outside.
The center of the housing is machined out to allow for larger wheels. And to note, these are just the major parts costs and assume you are already FBO with an upgraded chargepipe, etc. There will likely be other hoses and small things that will need to replaced as well. The Vargas setup is almost identical to the Pure setup with the slight exception of the wheels — this setup also uses an OEM-styled turbo with a bored out center and larger wheels.
The setup is good for whp,with proper tuning and fuel upgrades, on a stock chargepipe if you want it to blowup and whp with an upgraded chargepipe, per Vargas. Steam is a new ish company to the N55 tuning market and recently released their stage 2 setup, after a stage 1 setup which delivered whp with pump gas and meth. The extra 0. Now we are talking turbos that can engulf a child. A stage 3 turbo upgrade is the best bet for any N55 owner looking to break past the whp mark or push more than whp on a day to day basis.Remember Me?
Hey guys, thought we'd throw some N55 numbers on here from our OTS dyno testing session. This was our first official dyno session here locally with an EWG N The tune here is what we're calling a Stage 2 as the downpipe is on the car. Our recommendation is to change the FMIC first as the stock intercooler is barely up to snuff with the stock tune.
It heatsoaks really quickly especially on the dyno with such poor airflow. Ambient conditions were favourable in this case but starting IATs would range anywhere from 75F with a nice cooldown to 95F. Given tuning was was hampered due to the stock FMIC in the top end we believe simply switching to a quality aftermarket FMIC you'd easily see another whp on top from simply managing to keep IATs in check and being able to do 5th gear pulls instead of 4th.
Boost in midrange was in the psi range to hit these torque numbers with changes to ignition timing and fuel targets, no HPFP fuel pressure dropouts. This was on a 6MT car. It was great to see that an EWG N55 could hang with an N54 on pump gas with similar modifications as numbers are really close Let us know if any questions at all. Appreciate 2. First Lieutenant. So what does a tuning stage mean and what are the differences between a Stage 1, Stage 2 and Stage 3 tune up. There is a wide divergence of opinion on the web about these and some manufacturers merely mean option 1, option 2 or option 3. Others mean cheapest easy power gain, slightly more expensive but you'll get more power, and give us a blank cheque and we'll take everything to the max.

Stage 2 mods make more power but generally need other mods to support them or to get them to work properly. Let's look at what definitions people generally use to categorise modifications on cars and hopefully this will help demystify it for you, and when someone starts talking about stage mods you can call their bluff if they get it wrong! Stage 1 tuning is a "bolt on" or single modification that requires no other work to the car or engine.
You can consider a stage 1 modification to be referred to as a fast road mod. A stage 1 modification will usually be enhanced further with the addition of other performance parts. Examples of stage 1 mods, remap, sports exhaust silencer, air filter or brake pad upgrades. These are all simple single bolt on parts. Stage 2 tuning is a little more aggressive than stage 1 but needs to be added with other parts. It will give a power gain but will usually require the uprating or replacing of other parts to work.
Stage 3 tuning is also referred to as the motorsport or competition tune.
This is wholly unsuitable for road use. Examples of stage 3 mods include high performance brake pads and disks that require heat before they start to bite, aggressive cam profiles causing a lumpy tickover, heavy competition clutch, ultra light flywheels etc Power gains are not quoted for any of these stages as this varies dramatically from car to car, also the parts used have varying degrees of affect on the power band.
Adding two or more stage 1 mods will not make it a stage 2 mod if the upgrades would happily work on their own although you will generally release more power from each by combining them.
